What Is 2D Animation?

Animations created by manipulating flat, drawn characters and artwork from frame to frame to create the illusion of movement.

  • Uses flat, drawn characters and backgrounds rather than 3D computer modeling. The characters, objects and environments are all created by hand, usually on transparent sheets called cels.
  • Movement is achieved by manipulating the artwork frame by frame, similar to stop-motion animation. Slight changes are made to the characters and objects in each frame to create the illusion of movement when played sequentially.
  • Common techniques include hand-drawn animation, cutout animation (using pre-drawn character pieces moved around each frame), and stop-motion with physical objects and models.
  • Popular examples include classic Disney animated films, anime films and TV shows, South Park, Family Guy, Adventure Time and many children’s cartoons.
  • With the rise of 3D animation, 2D animation has become less common for feature films but is still widely used for television shows and lower-budget projects due to being cheaper and faster to produce than 3D.
  • Modern 2D animation is often done digitally using software, but the principles of manipulating frame-by-frame drawings remain the same as traditional cel animation.

2D Animation Use-Cases

It worked well for them. It’ll work for you, if it’s the best medium to tell your most compelling story.

2D Animation has not only been in use since the 1800s, but it has been the technology of choice in a number of both classic and modern films, including Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck, Snow White, The Jungle Book, and The Little Mermaid. TV shows that have used 2D Animation include The Simpsons and Family Guy.

When & Why to Use 2D Animation

Bolster your business with brilliant animation by Light Touch

• When explaining a complex process or product: 2D animation allows you to visually demonstrate steps, features, or functions in a clear and simplified way.

• When targeting a global audience: 2D animation avoids language barriers and cultural differences better than live-action video. The visual style translates globally.

• When promoting on social media: Animated videos perform better socially and are well-suited for platforms like Facebook and Instagram where viewers consume content casually.

• When working with a limited budget: 2D animation is generally more affordable to produce than live-action or 3D animation, allowing you to create high-quality content for less.

• When targeting younger audiences: Younger viewers have grown up with animated content and tend to engage more with videos that use a cartoon/animated style over live-action.

• When longevity is important: Animated videos don’t date themselves as quickly as live-action content. The visual style remains current-looking for longer than live people or locations featured in video do.

• When creativity and brand messaging are priorities: Animation gives more freedom to visually represent abstract concepts, values, emotions or a unique brand identity in a creative and memorable way.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Light Touch Media prepares for and produces 2D Animation for local companies or
some of the world’s most-recognized brands, these are the questions we’re most frequently asked:

The cost of a short 2D animation video can vary widely depending on factors such as the complexity of the animation, the length of the video, and the level of detail required. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars for a professional-quality 2D animation video.

The time it takes to produce a short 2D animation video for promoting your company can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the animation, the length of the video, the level of detail required, and the availability of the animation team. On average, a simple 1-2 minute 2D animation video can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to produce. However, more complex or longer videos may require additional time.

The best dimensions and length for a short 2D animation video can vary depending on the platform where you plan to showcase it. For most online platforms, a common aspect ratio for 2D animation videos is 16:9, which is the standard widescreen format. As for length, a short 2D animation video typically ranges from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. However, the ideal dimensions and length may also depend on your specific promotional goals and the preferences of your target audience.

Do this to get most mileage out of 2D animated video: 1.  Share videos on your company website, social media, YouTube, and email newsletters. 2. Use the video in paid advertising on Facebook, Instagram, or Google, to reach specific demographics most likely to buy. 3. Embed the video in relevant articles, landing pages, and your email signatures. 4. Use the video in presentations, at trade shows, conferences, and networking events. 5. Incorporate the video into email marketing campaigns. 6. Collaborate with industry influencers, partners, or affiliates.

You may want to consider a  different video format (live-action or 3D), if realism is important to your product or service, such as demonstrating how a machine or device works IRL. Or, if you want to showcase actual customers, users, or employees to help form a more personal human connection with viewers. Testimonials and interviews are also typically better done in live-action, since you’ll see real people taking emotively. If budget is a concern, live-action film might also be better than 2D  animation—depending on distance to site, number of participants, and other factors. Lastly, if photo-realistic or hyper-realistic visuals are needed, we’ll pick a medium that matches your product, your  intended video use, and your goals for the project.
